ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Amelia communicates her passion for life through her art. Sculpting is a talent that she was innately and freely given. Her bronze sculptures portray the seen and unseen pleasures, struggles and emotions of the human spirit.
Her unique bronzes daringly combine the use of classical figure and form, elements of nature, and the subconscious mind.
Sculptures serve as an outlet to communicate her internal world through introspection, taking time to see and share what she finds operating inside of her.
Amelia began her journey into art inspired by a fellow artist and good friend, Carolyn Jeskey making masks. This had such a profound impact on her that she began to ponder the "value" of art. In 1995, with a desire to acquire a better understanding of art, she enrolled as an Art History Major at Trinity College in Washington, D.C. It was during this period of study that Amelia obtained, sharpened, and demonstrated her new-found skills in fine art. During her studies she also worked with internationally renowned sculptor, Jim Sanborn. Sanborn had a tremendous influence and planted the "think bigger" seed into all aspects of her life.
In order to continue her education in sculpture, Amelia took on various fine arts modeling positions in exchange for instruction. As a result, she was able to enhance her figure sculpture skills using her artistic modeling experience.
Amelia's love for sculpture has continued to grow ever since. After departing Trinity, she attended private sculpture courses at Glen Echo in Bethesda, Maryland. Under the instruction of Sinclair Hamilton, she learned the fundamentals of realism while working part time as a fine arts model.
During her time in the DC, Maryland area, she became an active member of the local art community through DC-ART BEAT. The "BEAT" is produced by They Speak Productions, a group of artists and musicians based in DC that organizes experimental multimedia events.
She also was an active member Artist Collective Endeavors (A.C.E.). She participated in numerous group shows which helped expose and promote the local art scene. A.C.E. strived to create an unpretentious platform for a collective of new local artist and their supporters.
In 2000, Amelia moved to Austin and has been an active member of the Texas Society of Sculptors. Since 2001, she has also participated in the Umlauf Sculpture Garden and Museum Sculpfest. From 2000 till 2004, she was an artist in residence to Charles Mosters & Shari Wynne. Currently she works with her mentor, Herb Long, an instructor of the Elizabeth Ney museum school.
